Intro

This commercial project, led by Robert Lambert, the lead designer for Austin, aimed to ensure proper coordination of construction drawings across multiple disciplines. The goal was to conduct third-party quality checks on the construction drawing sets to ensure seamless integration between architectural, structural, civil, fire protection, fire alarm, technology, and MEP drawings.

Project Type: Commercial

Software Used: Bluebeam, Autodesk Construction Cloud, BIM 360

Client Name: : Austin

Task Assigned

The client assigned us to conduct an interdisciplinary coordination review on the construction drawing sets, ensuring that all the disciplines, along with general & title sheets, were well-coordinated and free from coordination clashes.

Challenges

A key challenge for Uppteam was ensuring proper interdisciplinary coordination between the drawings of various disciplines. Even if individual drawings were correct, our designers identified multiple issues when these components clashed, such as structural beams interfering with MEP ductwork or underground utilities conflicting with foundation elements.

The diverse presentation styles, symbols, and scaling conventions used by each discipline also complicated cross-referencing and comparison.

Additionally, missing or inconsistent references, such as misaligned section cuts or missing callouts, created gaps in the drawing set. Frequent design revisions further contributed to outdated or mismatched drawings, which needed careful verification to ensure alignment.

Solutions

To overcome these challenges, our team implemented a systematic quality control process led by our experienced engineering designers, who specialize in each discipline. They conducted thorough cross-checks of all discipline drawings, identifying and marking potential conflicts such as beam-duct interferences or utility-foundation overlaps.

Our designers used updated tools like Bluebeam, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and BIM 360 to review each discipline thoroughly to ensure they identified all coordination clashes.

Uppteam’s designers also standardized the presentation styles, symbols, and scales across all disciplines to facilitate accurate cross-referencing. Furthermore, they ensured that section cuts, callouts, and references were aligned correctly to eliminate drawing gaps.

This proactive approach reduced RFIs, minimized errors, reduced change orders, and enhanced the project’s overall efficiency. Our team helped our esteemed client mitigate the risk of on-site errors and save time and cost.
